This course follows the lives of Eugenio María de Hostos, José Martí, and Luisa Capetillo through their writings, their endeavors, achievements, and contributions to the struggles for freedom, education, and progress in the Americas. Students will read, analyze, discuss and gain an understanding of these authors’ major works in a historical, political, and literary context. The class will also study the historical presence of these writers in New York City and their activism for the self-determination and social development of their peoples. Special attention will be given to gender, racial, and class issues in a 19th- and early-twentieth century context.
