Message From The President
2026-2027 HOSTOS CATALOG MESSAGE
Knowledge is power. Information is liberating.
Education is the premise of progress,
in every society, in every family.
– Kofi Annan, Seventh Secretary-General of The United Nations
Power – liberation – progress.
This course catalog offers access to all three, however you define them. Hostos is here to help you find and hone your strengths and create the world you seek for you, your family, and your loved ones.
You might be starting your first semester at Hostos. You might be returning to your studies after time away. Wherever you are in your educational journey, we offer you a panoply of resources to take control of your life and achieve your goals.
This has been our mission since Hostos was founded in 1968.
Visionary educators, Puerto Rican activists, and other Latino community leaders worked together to bring secondary education to the South Bronx. The College bears the name of Don Eugenio MarÃa de Hostos (1839-1903). This legendary Puerto Rican philosopher, educator, and man of letters was a passionate believer in the transformative power of education. We believe that every sphere of activity, every field of study or discipline should be open to all, and this belief is reflected in the wide variety of courses described in this catalog.
Hostos offers associate in arts (A.A.) and associate in science (A.S.) degrees in over two dozen fields of study, encompassing – but not limited to – Liberal arts and sciences/liberal studies; Criminal justice/law enforcement administration; Business administration and management; Community health services/liaison/ counseling; Dental hygiene/hygienist; Registered nursing; Accounting technology/technician and bookkeeping; Medical radiologic technology/science and therapy; Animation, interactive technology, video graphics and special effects; Adult development and aging; Computer science and cybersecurity; and well over a dozen other areas of study.
Certificate Programs are another venue to personal and professional achievement. Our hard-working Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) Department certifies students in various aspects of Allied Health, Construction, Language Skills, Professional Development, Site Safety and other fields.
Education is not only a matter of academics. Hostos pays close attention to extra-curricular matters that can affect your work in the actual and/or virtual classroom. Financial aid is available to those in need. Student parents can rest easy knowing their little ones are being taken care of in our on-campus Children’s Center. Our Food Pantry helps to fight food insecurity issues. Our Counseling Center promotes psychological well-being. Other resources include the College’s Career Services Office; the Hostos Academic Learning Center (HALC); the Health Services Office; Orientation and Advisement; and Veterans Affairs.
Hostos is proud to call the South Bronx its home and is committed to playing a vital role in the life of the borough. Over the years we have happily provided space for town halls, forums, cultural events, and gatherings designed to discuss local, state, and federal legislation and policies that affect our students, their families, and the South Bronx itself.
The world has changed in so many ways since that day in April 1968 when the NYC Board of Higher Education answered community demands by establishing Hostos Community College. Technological and societal changes have been noted and incorporated into our curriculum and teaching methods. We have survived stormy economic times and have flourished. Our original home was in an old tire factory; in 2023 the magnificent Hostos Research Center officially opened its doors, and we are planning to extend the campus into the historic Bronx General Post Office Building to accommodate a surging student enrollment.
One thing, however has never altered over the years: Our desire to help you succeed in your chosen field. Your success is how we measure ours. Everyone – faculty, administration, staff – is dedicated to helping you derive the most from your time here.
Knowledge. Information. Progress. You’ll find them here.
It is a joy to welcome you to Hostos!
With my very best wishes,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
President
